Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Q1: What industries are prioritised under the National Innovation Visa (NIV)?
The NIV prioritises applicants within the following key sectors:
• Tier 1: Critical technologies, renewable energy, and healthcare.
• Tier 2: AgriTech, fintech, education, infrastructure, defense, and natural resources.
Q2: How does the NIV differ from the Global Talent Visa?
The NIV imposes more stringent eligibility criteria, places a stronger emphasis on exceptional achievements, and operates under a limited annual cap of 4,000 spots.

Q3: Can entrepreneurs without patents still qualify?
Absolutely! Entrepreneurs can be eligible if they demonstrate a strong track record in commercializing innovations or driving business growth, particularly within Australian innovation ecosystems.

Q4: What if my Expression of Interest (EOI) is not selected?
EOIs remain valid for two years. If you are not selected within this timeframe, you can reapply under any updated program criteria.
Q5: Are government nominations required for all applicants?
No, but applications nominated by Commonwealth, State, or Territory agencies receive priority processing (Priority 2).
Q6: Is there a minimum income requirement for NIV applicants?
No set income threshold applies. However, exceptional achievements—such as global recognition or leadership contributions—are highly valued in the selection process.
Q7: What happens if I miss the 60-day deadline after receiving an invitation?
If the deadline is missed, the invitation expires, and you cannot use it to apply. You may submit a new EOI, but there is no guarantee of receiving another invitation.
Q8: Can applicants outside the priority sectors still qualify?
Yes, while preference is given to Tier 1 and Tier 2 sectors, applicants with exceptional talent and global distinction in other fields may still be considered. Each application is assessed on merit, based on outstanding achievements and international recognition.
Q9: Are EOIs automatically declined if not selected?
No. EOIs remain active for up to two years, allowing applicants to be reconsidered if their profile aligns with updated program priorities or available quotas.
Q10: Do Innovative Investors need to commit to future investments?
No, the NIV assesses an applicant’s past contributions to innovation, such as angel investing or active involvement in startup ecosystems. While future investment plans are not mandatory, they are viewed favorably as an indicator of long-term commitment to Australia’s innovation landscape.
Q11: Is there an age restriction for NIV applicants?
There is no specific age limit. However, applicants under 18 or over 55 must demonstrate significant benefit to the Australian economy and society.
Q12: What types of achievements qualify under sports and creative industries?
Recognised achievements include:
• Winning prestigious international awards (e.g., Olympic medals, Academy Awards).
• Competing at an elite level in major international sports events.
• A distinguished portfolio of artistic accomplishments with global acclaim.
Q13: Does the NIV replace the Business Innovation and Investment Visa?
No, the NIV is not a direct substitute for business innovation visas. It is tailored for high-caliber investors who have demonstrably supported innovative ventures, without imposing minimum investment thresholds.
Q14: Do processing times vary based on priority level?
Yes. EOIs and visa applications are processed according to priority status.
• Priority 1 applicants (e.g., Nobel Prize winners) receive expedited processing.
• Other applicants may experience longer wait times, depending on demand and available program quotas.
